Although I'd love to say that it's LISTSERV's fault, it probably isn't.
There's all kinds of factors that come into play, such as the speed
of your server, the speed of your network, the number of relays
that a mail message has to pass through (one of these could be
delayed 4 hours before you would get mail about it), and how the
MTA and local delivery agent is configured on the list server.

LSoft claims that their software is significantly faster than 
majordomo's -- they even have graphs galore talking about it.  I
don't know if this will be the case or not once majordomo 2.0
comes out.  I think it all depends on how a system is configured --
one piece of software will work optimally in certain conditions, 
while others will be horrible.  Of course LSoft will perform tests
in a manner that will make them look best.

So, what do we get out of this?  Not much.  I recommend looking at
your system configuration first when you encounter significant
delays, and then maybe start thinking about other software.
