Thank you very much, Gennaro Esposito! Your suggestion to
look at the nsswitch.conf file worked on the solaris
machine (I still have problems on the NeXT cube, but it
handles nis differently.) I had tried using the nsswitch.conf
for files (instead of the nis version) previously, but I did
not know enough to change the order.

Now, here is what I have on a Sparc5 running Solaris 2.6:

In /etc/nsswitch.conf, I have removed dns for aliases:

	I had:	aliases:	files dns
	I have:	aliases:	files

At home I didn't have to worry about it since I only use
the nsswitch.conf version that has files (with one entry
for dns for hosts).

I appreciate your help, and I hope this is helpful for
someone in a similar situation.
