These are just a few of the companies and products
that are strongly committed to the future of
HTML/XML mail and messaging: ABC, AOL, CNN,
Eudora, IBM, InfoBeat, Lotus Notes, Microsoft,
Netscape, The New York Times, Pegasus, Red Herring
and ZDNet. HTML mail is rapidly approaching
critical mass and takeoff. It would be a shame if
the Unix camp got on the wrong side of this
revolution and further weakened its already
weakening marketing position via-a-vis Microsoft
and Windows.
Microsoft is reportedly working on additions to
Windows that will include and greatly improve on
the best features of majordomo, listserv and
similar programs for managing mailing lists. This
new software will not only be fully HTML/XML
aware, but be substantially framed in XML. I
wonder if the majordomo community, and the
traditional Unix community in general, sees what
is coming.
