Wayne, your stats are about a year or two old. Up until then many
companies and particularly the government were converting to Windows NT in
large numbers. However, in the last 18 months or so they've gone back to
Unix in droves. Why? When was the last time you saw an idle NT server
stay up for more than a few weeks or even a few days, much less a
busy one? Unix has been around for decades and is a much more stable,
mature OS. NT has a long way to go before it gets there.
How well does NT (running the MTA of your choice) handle large
volumes of mail? Not very, otherwise why would Microsoft themselves run
Unix for their main mail switches? As long as large mail hubs are Unix so
will most of the smaller ones and I don't see Microsoft coming out with a
mailing list program for them. In other words - Majordomo isn't going
anywhere anytime soon.
Bottom line is that there's enough marketshare around for
Microsoft, all the Unixes (Unicies?) of the world and then some. So this
squabling is pointless.
