My situation is a bit different from yours. I help with Majordomo at
eldar.org, and run it at spunge.org. Both are based on the same idea. Why
pay for something, when it doesn't take that much to do it. Majordomo is
provided free to us, and we provide free Majordomo services to people. Yes,
this could turn into a mess, and we look at the size of list, and how often
somethign is posted, because bandwidth is/can get expensive. Both sites are
run off of a simple 28.8 link. No, not fast, but works as long as people
don't want something "right now"
You, as an ISP, might try to take a different approach to this. You need to
break even, and even make a little for system upgrades. You might want to
look around at what others offer. I believe spark net is well priced, and
well liked. You might also want to somehow limit this to, only those using
your system can have a mailing list (possibly free of charge?), or
something like that.
We often get requests of joe and bob who want to set up a list for some
such subject. They are two people, with no money to back them. They usually
request small lists, but never know how much they will grow. These don't
seem to be much of a problem, as they are usually not high bandwidth. The
ones in the 1000+ member might be a little different.
