If you want the control over messages making it through to the archive that
making it a mailing list would give you then that's what you need to do. If
you're happy knocking up your own simple moderation script to pipe the
message through then by all means do that instead - but I don't see how you
can expect control over what goes into the archive without anything to
apply that control.

The idea behind making the archive function a seperate alias or list was to
give you that ability - you can just mail the relevant address directly.
I.e. crudely:
mail to list --> subscribers + archive address
mail to archive address --> archive
Mail to the list is thus in effect --> subscribers + archvie BUT you now
have the ability to email just the archive if you want.
