I use the below standard message when people do that.

This is a standard response.

You have tried to post a message to one of my mailing lists.
Your posting failed, because it is not in the plain text format.
This means that your posting contains some kind of attachment(s),
like html code, Rich Text Format, Word-attachments, Macbinhex,
base64 or the like. In order to be able to post your message,
please do the following:

1. Look up this web page:
   http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm

2. Scroll down the page to the part that refers to the mailprogram
   you are using.

3. Follow the instructions there about how to set your mail
   program to post plain text.

4. When you have set your mail program correctly, repost your
   message without any attachments.

5. You should consider making the plain text-format settings
permanent. If you do not make them permanent, you must set
them each time you are going to post to one of my mailing
lists (and, I might add, the same applies to 99 % of all
   other Internet mailing lists).

If the message you tried to post contained graphics or sound files,
you are not allowed to post such on the list and thereby swamp
peoples's mailboxes or mail connections. Instead, put those
pictures or sounds up on a web page, and then post the address of
the web page to the list.
