I am not sure about the official standards, but I do know that "+" has a
special meaning in email addresses, particulary in directing mail to
incoming folders. For example, if I subscribed to this list with
jmorace+mj@u.washington.edu, it would be sent to me, and put into an
incoming folder named "mj".
