Subject: message_footer syntax?

I have a message_footer coded in my list.config which begins with an
initial line of '-- '. My intention is that it be stripped by MUA's like
pine 4.05 when people choose to quote the whole message in a reply.
However, only a single '-' is actually getting published, so I'm seeing
multiples of my own advertisement chained at the bottom of some posts. Is
there some esoterica of perl which requires the '-' to be escaped somehow
if it occurs as the first character of a line in a here document? How can
I code it so that the output will be the standard signature delimiter of
newline, dash, dash, space, newline?

Microsoft has just announced it is renaming Windows NT version 5 to
"Windows 2000."
Is that the ultimate millennium bug or what?
