I first tried to let mhonarc add new mail as they came, but that didn't
work well on high volume archives. (Some archives were locked too long.)
Now I save all mail into files during the day, and run mhonarc just after
midnight with a cron job. The cron job also serializes the archiving of
all lists.

Mhonarc understands MIME, which is essential for our use.
