  I avoided this by setting SENDER to an administrative address
  and "REPLY-TO = list" . This way Mailer-Daemon messages end up
  in a special mailbox while replies goes back to the list.

  The above solution works perfectly for me as I can have threads
  alive without having Majordomo requests and error messages sent
  back to the list.

  SENDER receives 10-100 notifications on undelivered mails a day
  and I can assure you some of this Mailer-Daemons are broken!
  Yet none of them are mirrored to the list even though REPLY-TO
  is set to <list>.

  So "REPLY-TO = list" isn't necessarily a bad thing. :)
