This is probably a newbie question, but it's driving me nuts. . . I've set
up a list which I want to be closed. It works fine as an open list.
However, when I create a list-name.closed file, and try to approve a
subscriber, Majordomo doesn't appear to handle the subscriber's email
address correctly. For example, if I try to approve myself, by cutting and
pasting the suggested "approve" command line:
approve [PASSWORD] subscribe nc-instructors "Les Bell"
<lesbell@lesbell.com.au>
I get back the following reply:
>>>> approve [PASSWORD] subscribe nc-instructors "Les Bell"
Succeeded.
>>>> <lesbell@lesbell.com.au>
**** Command '<lesbell@lesbell.com.au>' not recognized.
>>>>
>>>>
**** Help for Majordomo@lists.lesbell.com.au
and the list file just contains "Les Bell", which of course is not a valid
address. IOW, majordomo is parsing the approve command and ignoring
everything after the first string it sees following the listname. It's even
worse with a user agent like Netscape Communicator, which doesn't quote the
user name - then the log file contains a "WARNING: Illegal space in
address: Les Bell" and the name doesn't get added to the list.
Now, by my reckoning, these are valid email addresses per RFC822, and I'm
going to have to deal with them. Is there some secret to modifying the
approve command, or some other workaround? I can't believe I'm the first
person to strike this, so it must be fairly easy . . . I hope! <g>
Best,
