That error message is confusing. What is should say is
majordomo@jla21a.resnet.cornell.edu: "" is not a valid return address.

That is, majordomo gets somthing where it cannot find any address. How do
you start majordomo? It should normally not be run from the command line,
and it should allways have a mail message on standard input.
