If the latter, I'm cranky too :) I said the same thing (specifically
about the "smrsh" problem) recently.

I'm not overly fond of moderation. Would an autoresponder be any better
than a "welcome" message which tells people where to find the FAQ, advises
research before asking a question, etc.? (I haven't looked at this list's
welcome message in a long time, but maybe it could be modified, if
necessary, to teach a little list etiquette.)
