Micheal and All,
After much curiousity I finally got around to installing MD via my web
host's provided Control Panel software and have been amazed at how there
doesn't seem to be any "beginner's documentation" for the software. I
haven't even gotten around to messing with the digest and I'm still
wondering about things such as how to administer a list from remote and
such--as head shakingly sad as that reads...
My point being though that it would seem that these web hosting
companies that give us the option to install MD is somewhat of a
mistake. It would seem from what little time I've monitored this users'
list that most people have MD installed on their server and have direct
access to components/dox that I obviously do not. I've been in the
computer biz for many years (such as many others have I am sure) and
this software would seem to me to be something that is best put in the
hands of someone who has "first person contact" with the server
itself...
Nevertheless, I will take the sound of crickets or a good tongue lashing
for asking the question to a list which obviously has users that aren't
really having any trouble/complaints with the most basic workings of the
MD software. I do not want to sound combative, I am just looking for
someone who has experienced this same thing and may have some
constructive ideas on how to maybe throw up some better documentation
out there somewhere if it's not been done already.
Q: Is there not a more informative FAQ or online documentation for
MajorDomo that reveals, 1. Some of the most basic tasks to setting up
and managing a list which including focus on the actual script's inner
workings? 2. Stand-alone utilities that simplify the editing of the base
script and text configuration itself? 3. Dox on remote administration of
a list?
In my case, I have been drug around by the nose via my web host's MD
configuration software and have, what I believe, to be a "working
understanding" of what MD can do and how to setup a list, but, I have
yet to experience it working as specified. Such as creating a list
(simple) and then subscribing to the list (and having a friend do so
too) and then trying to mail the list and seeing results as would be
expected. ie. Writing to your_list@your_domain.com and everyone on the
list seeing the message in short order and being able to reply as easily
as services such as Onelist.com etc. etc.
I'd think (from my experience so far) that GreatCircle would have
considered majordomo-beginners@greatcircle.com or maybe even more
appropriately majordomo-llamas@greatcircle.com... ;) I wouldn't be the
least bit embarassed to join such a list yet have probably have typed
myself into a "don't give the car keys to the drunk guy at the party"
I guess we will see... <burp!> :)
