Mime did not exist (or had not caught on yet) when majordomo was written.
It is like a foreign language to majordomo and it's utility scripts like
archive2.pl. The beauty of these archive files is that they can be put
into your local mail folder directly, and viewed with pine, netscape, and
other mail clients as if they had been receiving the messages themselves.
There may be a replacement archiving utility to do what you are asking,
but if you do not find one, you could de-mime the message before it gets
into the archive file, or refuse mime'd messages and require plain text
posting to the list. I do the latter.
