So what you are telling us is that you did not have 1.94.4 previously, 
and now that you have upgraded the OS and perl, you are trying to 
compile the wrapper for 1.94.4?

If you are starting over with a new version, might I suggest MJ2 or the
actual latest release (1.94.5)?

Did you run ./configure before attempting to make wrapper?  I have 
used the tar.gz version on several OSes without problems, but Irix
has not been one of them.  I hope someone here can provide the help
you need.
