And then I get back from xyz.org (the only one out of 450+ subscribed
organizations where this happens), for each of their subscribers an error
message
"RE: Warning: a85226440@xyz.org - User unknown!"

Are you indicating Dan, that for a header starting like the one above, your
MTA would also generate such an error message?

Thanks for the additional detail. I'm an inexperienced BSD/majordomo
administrator (except by the standard remote email command way of
administering lists) and don't understand sendmail, but am getting at least
a minimal understanding of the files in usr/local/majordomo/lists.

I don't have a "virtustable" file in etc/mail. The two files starting with
"virt" are virtmaps and virtmaps.db with virtmaps just having a few lines
none of which pertain to the individual lists that are generating these
error messages.
