Don't know about recent versions of Elm and Mutt, but recent versions of
Pine do a fairly decent job of handling HTML messages.  But that doesn't
mean I think AOL shouldn't be drawn and quartered for switching to
HTML-only e-mail.  They've always had the attitude that e-mail between AOL
members is more important than e-mail between AOL members and the rest of
the world, so we shouldn't be surprised.
