When one of our internal mailing list arrives at the mailbox of a user
who is gone/activated the vacation function, everybody on the list gets
a copy of the vacation message. Thus if 20 faculty members are on
vacation (and have activated vacation), a MD mailing list sent to the
faculty members will result in 20 vacation messages being mailed to the
same list....one mailing = n mailings +1 mailings (the original one),
where n is the number of mailing list members using vacation.
Thankfully, this does not endless loop.
What have people done to suppress this?
Ideally, I need some filter to MD itself that would discard anything
submitted from vacation.
Can this be as simple as using the taboo stuff on the header and
triggering on 'From: via the vacation program' and 'Subject: away from
my mail' ? Are there any drawbacks to this?
On these lists:
1) the lists are unmoderated AND
2) I want just to dump any messages from vacation, NOT review them.
Thanks in advance for your wisdom(I hope!) and help.
Some more elaborate (and uglier) things I have thought of are:
1) I see automagic in the archives for 3 years ago, but nothing on
Jason's current pages and no mention of it in the FAQ. Did it have
problems? Are people using it?
2) I could conceive of doing some with procmail, having its trigger
string being "via the vacation program"...but it looks like I'd have to
do something that would affect all users' incoming mail, very
kludgy/ugly
