Auto Reply Messages

I would like to know if it is possible to prevent the auto reply message
that is generated when a user first adds him/herself to a list from being
sent.

I have added a basic intro file so now, when a new user adds him/herself to
a list, two messages appear in their inbox --- I want a list server to help
me cut down on e-mail, not double it.
