i agree with the others. i have a couple of 2000 member lists and a
couple of smaller ones running on a 166MMX, and the box is mostly
idle.

the main thing is to make sure that your MTA is well configured. look
at alternatives to sendmail like exim, postfix and possibly qmail (a
little more work to do majordomo w/qmail), or else prepare to learn a
lot about sendmail (probably more than you really wanted to know.)

i'm using exim+majordomo and it works quite well.
