I have had listnames nearly 40 characters in length, but that 
has been quite a long time ago and I can not access the servers 
from those projects to give you an exact count.  

No.  Space is not an allowed character in a list name.

List names must be of the form "[a-z0-9_-]+" (in other words, letters,
digits, underbars, or dashes only).  List may be of mixed or upper
case, but all references to the list name below must be specified
in lower case EXCEPT for the -l arguments of resend and majordomo.

Notice that even upper case letters are not included in the set
of allowed characters in the example.  These are allowed in aliases
and configs, but all filenames associated with listnames must be
lower case.
