This is from the NEWLIST file in the Doc directory....
List names must be of the form "[a-z0-9_-]+" (in other words, letters,
digits, underbars, or dashes only). List may be of mixed or upper
case, but all references to the list name below must be specified
in lower case EXCEPT for the -l arguments of resend and majordomo.
The is no mention of the dot "." character being allowed in
filenames/listnames. Specifically, this character is excluded from
the exact list of what is allowed. Therefore, dots are not allowed.
(in other words, letters, digits, underbars, or dashes only)
