Had this same problem yesterday with my install... luckily many 
people on this list have as well so it was easy to figure out. Make 
sure that the '/usr/local/majordomo'  and 
'/usr/local/majordomo/lists' directories are NOT world writable... 
Sendmail will complain if it is and you'll get errors like you listed.

777 is dangerous anyway... no need to have them writable by all. Just 
owner and group.
