ok... I've inherited the administration of a majordomo arrangement using:
majordomo 1.94.4, perl 5.005 and sendmail, running on Solaris 2.6
For the most part, everything works perfectly-- however, when subscribing
(or unsubscribing) an address of the form: name@some.thing.some.other.thing
I get the following message back:
--
>>>> approve PASSWORD_REMOVED subscribe testlist
**** Address already subscribed to testlist
>>>> butled@mail.conservation.state.mo.us
**** Command 'butled@mail.conservation.state.mo.us' not recognized.
**** Help for Majordomo@ocelot:
-------------
apparently what's happening is that it's trying to subscribe the moderator
(i.e., the one sending the message) to the list, which of course fails since
they're already subscribed. This is even more annoying with unsubscribe
requests (assuming I've subscribed such an address by manually editing the
list), since it ends up unsubscribing the moderator from the list.
As I said, this problem does not occur with email addresses of the form
name@company.com or even name@mail1.company.com, only when there are 4 or
more components to the right of the @.
Any pointers as to what type of absurdity is going on here would be greatly
appreciated :-)

All parts should go together without forcing. You must remember that the
parts you are reassembling were disassembled by you. Therefore, if you
can't get them together again, there must be a reason. By all means, do not
use a hammer.
