Mac OS X's internal firewall configured using FirewalkX - works for me.
I'm inclined to take your advice & set up a VPN tunnel from home
anyways. Although that might have to wait until 10.2 (Grrrrrr).

oh, and one more thing -- if you have it set up so that your home system
has administrative access, then you _have_ got a proper firewall at
