Hello,
Based on what I've found so far, it seems support for Majordomo (and its
widespread use) may be declining. I'm querying the majordomo-users list to
hear your opinion of Majordomo's current state and what its future may hold.
Obviously, folks on this list will likely view majordomo as widely used;
however, where do you think the rest of the e-mail admin community is
headed? (For example: I think Mosaic is a cool browser, but I know it's not
as mainstream as it used to be.)
My perception is based on the following:
The current version is 1.94.5, released Jan 18, 2000
Majordomo-announce archive stops after 2001
Majordomo-users archive stops after August of 2002
FAQ info related to sendmail references old sendmail versions as if they
were current
And similar imperfect evidence that I could be misinterpreting :-)
I am not attempting to put down Majordomo from a technical perspective. The
last time I messed around with list servers (1996-ish) I seem to remember
ListSERV and Majordomo being the main tools in use. Imagine my recent
surprise to find that ListSERV has gone commercial and Majordomo hasn't been
updated in well over three years.
If you think majordomo may be in decline, what are the other "real players"
in terms of free list serve software? I know dozens exist, but which ones
are in widespread use or considered the de-facto standard? If I go to the
trouble of building a list serve environment, I'd like to increase the
chances that my replacement will have worked with the tools I choose.
Thanks in advance for your input,
-John C.
