Ron,
The confirmation email is based on the subscribe_policy option in the
list configuration file. If you don't want the confirmation email, set
it to "open".
On the web based subscription issue, you cannot use plain HTML. I would
suggest MajorCool. It's written in Perl and is easy to setup.
