This is directed specifically at Dan Liston, but other opinions
will be welcomed.
I want to build a server computer and put it on my second static
IP. My ISP allows me to run a server. It would be behind a Linksys
BEFSR41 connected to my DSL modem. I have some old 486 machines
that run DOS apps, and would use one if that seems appropriate, or
I could buy/build a computer with or without software.
I want to learn another operating system (Linux?), first with a
SMTP and POP3 application, then later I would like to include
majordomo. This will primarily be a learning experience for me,
but I want to be able to handle my own email and web pages in the
future should my present providers let me down.
I have some minimal UNIX command line experience, and (I think)
I still have the ability to learn. I started with an octal
keyboard input to an 8080, became proficient in CP/M and later
in DOS, but I haven't done any "real programming" in any
apparition of Windows.
Suggestions? Reference material/links? Cautions? This is a project
for next year.
