Hmmmm... it's been awhile since I used FBSD-4.4, but I never had any
problems when moving up to 4.5-RELEASE, which runs sendmail-8.11.6 as well.
BUT, 4.5-STABLE includes sendmail 8.12.+ -- sendmail-8.12.+ really changed
some things. Look at the header of any of the regular emails and you can
see the Sendmail version there.
