it varies wildly.
you need to make documented backup procedures one of things you check for
when qualifying potential vendors of web hosting.
i run a very tiny web hosting business on the side, on minimal funds. it
was a major event when i built a duplicate system in my basement and
started doing nightly rsync snapshots of everything important on the disk.
in my day job, i do a lot of higher end stuff, and the lack of backup on my
little web host always annoyed and bothered me. it should (and clearly
does) annoy and bother you.
