	Yes, it is owned by Microsoft, but, I have read more than one article, 
that Microsofts hotmail is run on BSD based servers. This was true as of last 
year, and I believe that microsoft is trying to migrate hotmail to Windows 
NT/2000 based servers, I'm not sure that has happened yet. As far as I know, 
until I read otherwise, hotmail is based on BSD Unix. I doubt that BSD would 
crap out as a mail server.

	Someone other than me would be able to provide more details, but when 
Microsoft bought the Hotmail a few years back, it was based on BSD. Microsoft 
came in and attempted to switch it over to Windows NT. Windows NT fell flat on 
it's face and it was moved back to BSD. And they have been trying to get 
whatever variant of Windows to scale to the point where they can move in Windows 
to handle the load. But as far as I kow, that has not happend yet. or so the
