Take a look in the contrib directory for new-list. This is a
perl script for auto-replying when a list has been announced
but is not ready for subscribers yet. I am sure I could be
renamed to old-list, and the reply message modified to fit
your specific needs.
Even easier would be to set an alias or forward on the address
of the old list, pointing to the new one. Assuming the old
users are already subscribed to the new list.
Or, if you list were still active, you might make use of the
footer feature and put the announcement of the list closing
there. Use of this feature implies use of demime so that
mime boundries do not prevent the footer from being seen.
