Thanks for your response, Prudence.  The file corresponds exactly to my 
backup of it which was made months ago, and in fact it has the same 
datestamp as the backup. Only the owner has permission to write to it, 
everyone can read it.

I did note that someone else on this list had received a similar error 
in January. I checked all the permissions as indicated in the replies 
to that post. No file or directory allows anyone but the owner to write 
to it.

The datestamps indicate that neither /etc/aliases nor 
/usr/local/majordomo/majordomo.aliases has changed since I last ran 
newaliases several months ago. Also, majordomo continues to deposit 
posts to the list in the digests directory. It's not sending the posts 
out to the members, however.
