So it means it can't be done... fantastic. :-( I guess I'll have to make
the message bilingual. Not very elegant, if you ask me. Isn't there any
other way? Would installing another copy of Majordomo work?

Majordomo 2 supports multiple languages, but only one per list.
Majordomo 1 (what you're probably using) supports one language per site.
