There's no benefit at all to storing it in two places. But many modern MLM's store lists in databases and select the target addresses at send-time, instead of keeping them in a flat file. That's likely what he's asking, and the answer is that, no, Majordomo 1 does not do it. Majordomo 2 does, but it's not very efficient, and it has some specific schema requirements.
