The apparent reason for the less than universal use of $mailer appears
to be that not everyone wants the same option flags when invoking
sendmail, so I changed my installation to use $SENDMAIL as the path to
sendmail and supplied flags as desired, but a separate config variable
could specify default flags too. Having a consistent variable to specify
the MTA is more esthetically appealing then linking sendmail all over
the system.
