To take the opposing view, I don't see any benefit to this.
The folks who didn't like a mailing list are saved the typing
of a whole one-line email message. Meanwhile, those who
did like it get to send an extra one. In my experience,
folks end up unsubscribing only after a considerable time
has passed anyway, after they finally realize that they
aren't reading any of the messages any more, just throwing
them all out. I.e., I believe any reasonable sample period
is likely to be too short.
Let's keep the to-do list to features that buy us a bit
more, given the limited available bandwidth in upgrading/
maintaining MD.
