The project I am working on uses a search engine developed by Dr. Stan
Beeler, which does keyword searches on arbitrary text archives employing
a minimal "database" structure of a)a heading line which uniquely
identifies an item and b)a blank line to separate records.
The code from this project is being made freely available (under the
usual provision of acknowledement of sources).
We're planning to use the engine to make mail archives searchable,
possibly through running periodic scripts to convert the mail files
to our structure.
You can view the engine at work at: http://quarles.unbc.edu/shakescan
