This seems dicey because of the issues with locking and moving around of
temp files.  I suggest you try it, but I think that if possible you should
put the files in the correct directory and put links to them elsewhere.  I
know this might break a scheme where you use chroot, though.

You can have the list directory be a symlink, though.  I've tried that one.
