This whole thread is getting more and more out on a limb.

Why spend valuable time finding and debugging a perl (or worse, perl5)
program when a simple, stable, thoroughly-tested-since-time_t=0 (okay,
maybe not that old) install.sh is available?

Doing a chown -R is bad, in any form.  very bad.

Can we please drop this now?
