Well, if we're even going to pretend to properly pass MIME, we have no
choice but to embed all of the messages in a multipart/digest.

Well, anything that supports MIME should support a multipart/digest.
That's quite a large amount of software these days.  Unfortunately it
doesn't cover everything, and that is the main argument against MIME
digests: they're a bit difficult to read if you don't have MIME tools.

Strict adherence to RFC1153 for old-style digests is by definition toxic to
MIME, and I would find it odd to bend that regulation in order to stick in
MIME headers in a manner which probably won't work well.

There probably isn't an all-encompassing solution, but I think the one that
looks forward (i.e. MIME multipart/digest) makes the most sense.
