I haven't seen anybody clamoring to do help files (but see last para),
so I have made a very preliminary stab at a top-level help file, as it
could possibly be used in conjunction with help requests of other kinds.
I have tried to follow the general philosophy outlined by Roger Klorese
(see m-w archives thread starting at message 142 of 20 Jan 1997).
However, I have attempted to keep the top-level file simpler. I would
be inclined to put only the stuff that we know causes the most trouble
into a top-level file, on the general principle that people have limited
attention spans. More detailed help can go into sub-files.
The draft is at http://world.std.com/~jkahila/mj-2.0/general-help.html.
I am not highly (or even slightly) attached to the current organization
of this material -- feel free to suggest changes or even a total
rewrite. And of course if there is somebody already working on help
files I will be happy to do something else. :-)
I am especially interested in knowing about things that might have to be
altered for 2.0. Keep in mind that I am perl-illiterate, and my
familiarity with the sources is poor.
In one message in the archives, I saw a reference to a -docs list, but I
haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere. Is this a real mj list?
