It would technically be possible to count how many addresses were actually
sent the message, although I can't really see how this is useful.

If you want to wait a _long_ time to send the notification, it would also
be technically possible to do this, to.  But you have to wait something
like seven days.

We can tell them their post went out.  We could (if someone wanted to write
the code) tell them how many addresses we tried to deliver to, but that
isn't the number of people subscribed and isn't going to count users
getting the digest and such.  If some random number of list members are
having delivery problems I don't see how that could be useful information
to contribute back to the poster, especially given that we won't even know
for several days.

If you users just want the subscriber count, they can do a who.  If you
disabled who then you obviously don't want them to know that information.
