It's an interesting idea and I suppose it would be useful in Majordomo2 but
I can't quite see how to make it work. It looks to me that if you see a
message that does not have the subject_prefix attached, you generate a new
thread number and attach it. That's a simple heuristic that doesn't
require that you keep track of the actual subjects, but I can't see how to
apply it when (as with Mj2) some users don't get subject_prefixes and
others do (based on their user preferences). Even with Majordomo1 and
someone like me, who strips off all annoying prefixes using Procmail, this
system will break down because when I reply, you'll generate a new thread
number for my messages.
The only way I can see to make a bulletproof implementation is to keep a
database of subjects. I'm not really sure this is a good idea, but it
wouldn't be too terribly difficult to actually code.
