I'm sure the last thing you all want to hear about is Reply-To munging,
but a discussion of whether or not to munge the Reply-To on a list
I'm subscribed to led me to wonder about the following. (Keep reading,
a feature suggestion follows!)
My only objection to Reply-To munging is that it's lossy; if someone
sets a Reply-To: header, then it disappears once the message has been
sent out by majordomo. On the other hand, munging the Reply-To *does*
promote list-based discussion on lists which lend themselves to that.
As it stands, it appears that Reply-To munging is all-or-nothing; the
list administrator decides whether to do nothing with it, or to munge
it on all messages.
The feature suggestion, then, is to only munge the Reply-To: if the
originator of the message didn't add one. That way, there's no
important information being discarded, posters have control over where
replies should go, and the default is still to reply to the list.
(The changelog between 1.94 and 1.94.1 reads in part
If a list adds its own Reply-To: header, any Reply-To: header in
incoming messages will be removed.
This makes me wonder if this behavior used to be the case but no
longer is.)
If this has been considered before and was rejected, please let me
know. If not, I'll happily submit a patch.
