That's odd.  I suppose that, given certain settings for 'hosts' in
nsswitch.conf (or however your OS configures its name service switch),
/etc/hosts could be ignored but that's not generally the way it works.

But yes, if you're running your own DNS you really must have a PTR record
from 127.0.0.1 to localhost.

More interesting to me is automatic list setup under 8.10.  They keep
taking out all of the odd features we use to get this working without
providing us with anything like the methods we have under other MTAs.  When
8.9 came out we had to put in all of the weird symlinks to the alias files,
and now they've taken out AutoRebuildAliases and prevented unprivileged
users from doing the rebuild.  That leaves us without any way to do it.
