Actually, now that I think about it some more, quoting (in the '>' style)
serves to protect the parser from recognizing spurious commands that might
fall within text (and thus preventing even worse confusion). "accept" is
the one we are really concerned with. Owners could make use of a
theoretical 'ignore prefix' to do:
ignore >

Doesn't listname-subscribe and the availability of a web interface make this
mostly go away? A large portion of people only ever want to get on and off
lists and never use the server for anything else. Although, with Mj1 there
wasn't much else they could do, so perhaps things will be different under
Mj2.
There is a danger here of trying to eliminate too much cruft or being too
permissive in what we accept, especially when the cruft looks so much like
actual syntax that we want to make use of. This has already bitten us once
with signature_separator preventing some people from accepting tokens. I
think it's prudent to see just how many issues crop up with the new
software then work on solving them.
