You get more than just that, don't you?  It should at least echo the
line it's reading back to you.

Most likely it's reading all of the HTML and MIME crap that you're
sending out and getting confused.  Majordomo 1.9x doesn't handle MIME
at all.  Majordomo2 does.  If you want to talk to Majordomo1 servers,
you'll have to turn off the HTML stuff.
